Mutts, purebreds, trendy crossbreeds—it doesn’t matter. At Top Tails, we love all kinds of dogs. More than that, we love taking care of all kinds of dogs! However, we totally understand if you are leaning towards a specific breed, and therefore are in the market for a breeder.

If you’re considering a new furry edition to the family and you want him/her to be purebred, it’s imperative that you find a reputable, responsible breeder. There are certain criteria you should be looking for and some pitfalls you have to avoid. Not to worry, we’re here to help you navigate the world of dog breeders!

Choosing the Right Breed for You

The first step to finding a breeder is to choose a breed. This will help you narrow down your pool of possible breeders. To choose a breed, you need to evaluate your lifestyle to see what you want/need in a dog. For example, there are child friendly breeds and breeds better for retirees. Every household is different and will jive better with a different dog. After determining what kind of characteristics you’re looking for, you’ve got to do your research on the breed.

Creating a List of Possible Breeders

After some serious consideration and extensive research on the breed of your choice, it’s time to get searching for the right breeder. There are quite a few aspects to take into consideration when compiling your list, including:

To start your search, you should consider looking for a referral. Ask people you know, or better yet, ask a vet! Chances are if a breeder has the approval of an owner or a vet they are good enough for your list.

You should also take advantage of the Internet. Search registries and dog clubs for reputable breeders. Try searching “name of breed” + “club” or visit the American Kennel Club website.

We cannot stress enough how important it is to choose a registered breeder. You absolutely must avoid puppy mills and pet stores, and really if possible, don’t opt for hobby breeders or those who just do it to make a quick buck. Seeking out a true professional is in your best interest. After all, a dog is an investment for the next 10-20 years.

Be sure to look through the reviews on each breeder. Those with poor reviews should get crossed off the list.

Getting to Know Your Breeder

Once you have your top candidates, it’s time to get to know them and their business. For starters, you should always visit the breeder’s property to ensure the conditions are more than suitable. You’ll also want to ask them a ton of questions. The more information they can provide, the more reputable they are and the better off you and your new pup will be!

For a full list of what you should ask and what should be asked of you, look to the Humane Society. They always have the dog’s (and owner’s) best interest at heart.

After researching, meeting with the possible breeder(s) and discussing all the necessary information, you should be set to decide on a breeder. From there, it’s only a matter of time until a happy, healthy puppy makes its way into your home!

At the end of the day, having your own nearly custom puppy can be very appealing. But please, never forget there are countless amazing dogs awaiting a home at your local shelter. More often than not, these dogs make for just as great of a pet, maybe even better (depending on your situation)!
