Because cats generally aren’t fond of going on walks like dogs are, it can be hard to gauge how much exercise your feline is getting. But physical activity is just as important for cats as it is for dogs, so you should encourage your furry friend to exercise on a regular basis. Doing so will help your cat maintain an appropriate weight, build muscle strength and stay sharp mentally.
If you have a younger cat, we recommend playing with it for 10-15 minutes a few times each day. If your cat is older and is no longer very playful, shorter periods of activity will still benefit it immensely. Here are a few ideas and tips for a healthy cat from your friends here at Top Tails:
- Make sure your cat has access to a scratching post or pad. Not only is this a great opportunity for exercise, but it will decrease the likelihood of your cat using its claws on the furniture.
- Provide tissues, paper, napkins or cardboard for your cat to play with. Chances are it will be highly entertained by these materials.
- Buy or build a cat condo for your furry friend to climb and jump on.
- Schedule pet playdates with other cats. This will allow your cat to get out excess energy while also socializing it.
- Invest in a laser pointer. The majority of cats will be very intrigued by the light beam and love chasing it across the floor! Just be sure not to shine the light into your cat’s eyes during playtime.
- Give your cat a mental and physical workout with a food puzzle. These clever devices force the cat to figure out how to access the food inside.
By engaging with your cat in these ways, you’ll improve both its happiness and health. If you’re looking for more tips for a healthy cat and dog, you won’t want to miss our recent blog posts: “5 Easy New Year’s Resolutions for Pets” and “Winter Pet Care Tips from Top Tails.”
