When you get a new cat, it’s important to do some preparation before bringing it home to ensure its safety, health, and happiness. Here are a few of the most important steps you can take to make your new feline feel at home:
- Prepare food and water bowls. If you already have a cat or a dog, place the new cat’s food and water at a different spot. Doing so will discourage competition between your pets at feeding time.
- Buy a litter box for each story of your home. In order to ensure that your new cat or kitten doesn’t go to the bathroom on the floor, it’s important to place a litter box on each story of the house. If you already own a cat, your pets may be able to share a litter box – you’ll just have to observe their behavior to make sure they’re not fighting over it. To keep your cats healthy and satisfied, be sure to clean the litter at least once a day.
- Put potentially dangerous items out of reach. When cats arrive in a new environment, they like to explore. To make sure that this is safe for them to do, put away all medications, cleaning products, and small household items. In addition, cover electrical cords so that your cat can’t chew on them. Also keep in mind that because cats can climb and jump, you’ll need to remove dangerous or breakable items from high places that your cat can access.
- Get a collar and ID tag for your cat. Whether your cat is going to live inside, outside, or a combination of the two, you’ll need tags and a collar for it in case it ever gets lost.
